Dutch banking group ING has announced a €1.65 billion share buyback despite missing third-quarter earnings expectations, as higher provisions and operating costs weighed on an otherwise profitable period.

The lender reported net profit of €1.85 billion, up 3.5% from a year earlier but below analysts' consensus forecast of €1.97 billion. Total income increased 5.6% to €6.23 billion, while loan-loss provisions reached €403 million, exceeding expectations of €343 million. ING said the higher provisions largely reflected changes to its risk assessment methodology rather than a deterioration in borrowers' financial health.

The bank nevertheless announced shareholder distributions totalling €1.9 billion, comprising the buyback and an additional €250 million cash payment scheduled for January 2027. Its core capital ratio stood at 13.3%, above regulatory requirements. ING also unveiled plans to restructure its wholesale banking division, potentially affecting approximately 400 jobs worldwide. The changes will streamline operations and introduce a greater focus on corporate and institutional banking.

Shares initially declined as investors weighed the earnings disappointment against the substantial capital return. The results offer a mixed picture of European banking profitability, with customer activity remaining resilient while costs and credit provisions place pressure on earnings. ING's restructuring also reflects efforts to improve efficiency as competition for corporate clients intensifies. For investors, the coming quarters will test whether stronger commercial activity can translate into earnings growth without further increases in operating costs or credit-related provisions.
