Deutsche Bank reported a stronger-than-expected third-quarter profit on Wednesday, as growth in retail and corporate banking compensated for declining investment banking revenues during a period of unsettled financial markets.

Net profit attributable to shareholders rose 2% to €1.59 billion, compared with €1.56 billion a year earlier, exceeding analysts' average forecast of €1.44 billion. The German lender also recorded group profit before tax of €2.6 billion, an 8% annual increase, marking another profitable quarter under chief executive Christian Sewing.

The performance contrasted with weaker conditions in investment banking, where revenue declined 2%. Fixed-income and currency trading income fell 3% following an exceptionally strong comparative quarter last year. Rising bond yields, geopolitical tensions and uncertainty surrounding technology valuations have weighed on capital market activity, making trading and investment banking revenues less predictable.

Elsewhere, Deutsche Bank's businesses performed more strongly. Revenue from private banking increased 8%, while corporate banking income rose 9%, both exceeding market expectations. The lender subsequently raised its full-year revenue outlook to more than €33 billion, compared with previous guidance of approximately €33 billion. Its asset management and wealth businesses also reported significant client inflows.

The results provide further evidence of Deutsche Bank's progress in diversifying its earnings beyond volatile investment banking activities. That shift has become increasingly important as European lenders contend with changing interest rates and uneven corporate investment. Sustaining profitability across its core divisions will be central to maintaining investor confidence in the bank's restructuring and longer-term growth strategy.
